EMPATHIC CURIOSITY: CARING ABOUT THE FEELINGS OF OTHERS

As long as we have a feeling stir within the heart, which reminds us that we are not separate from those others we encounter, there is a chance for goodness, wholeness, deep love. Empathy is the act of perceiving the feelings of others as one’s own.
If we are not separate in truth, and are One in that we are all created in the image of the One God, the Great Creator, then it all makes sense to me. It is why a very old knowing was communicated and holds true: Treat others as you would like to be treated. Don’t do things to people you would not like to have done to you.

Life seems to teach us that when we do things that harm others, we get it back, in some form. This then teaches us how it feels to have been “the other person” and then we feel within ourselves that Oneness we were not conscious of before.

I see life as a kind of wild ride where we gain consciousness bit by bit, or sometimes through tragedy or crisis, through our own actions and because of the actions of others. What else is there? I’d rather be curious about others, and ask myself many times a day, “What would it feel like to be that person right now?”

And then to choose to be kind, loving, generous.

HOW TO KEEP PAINFUL MEMORIES FROM TAKING OVER

Painted Stream Drawing Elaine Clayton copyright 2016

Do you notice that throughout the day different memories drift into your mind and before you know it, you’ve got a running narrative of various painful thoughts? When I stream draw with people and we ready ourselves for a memory stream drawing, the memories that generally want our attention immediately are not all the happy ones. Ekhart Tolle describes this as the “pain body”—it is like an alternate self to who you truly are–an ego construct that hangs out with you, often makes decisions for you and runs your life–if you allow it. It is a hungry separate self carrying all the pain you’ve suffered and it feeds on more pain, and it will fight hard to stay with you in your every moment. You, the real you, the whole and complete and miraculous you in essence, is not this pain body.

So why do we let memories from so long ago or even yesterday, ruin our moment in the now? Why would we let this specter, this victim of life circumstances have power over our time, each moment? We don’t have to. The moment we notice this is happening, that we replay in our thoughts things that re-injure us, this is the pivotal opportunity because once YOU realize YOU can see that this pain has staying power, YOU are no longer identifying with the pain because you are now connecting to who you truly are–the observer, the witness to circumstances. Stream drawing is one way to get into that observer mode and fast, plus it is a physical action, which edifies your intention because it puts into action, and then into physical form via the actual drawing on paper.

Stream draw to get control over the pain body, and fly over it. And have some fun!

REIKI

I am a Reiki Master and have found it to be a wonderful, life changing healing modality. We can use conscious intention and visualization to create healing in our bodies and to create emotional wellbeing. Reiki allows us to take charge of ourselves and bring in healing energy where it is needed most. We learn from our illnesses and from the process of healing, through empowerment of self. My Reiki sessions are all about your empowerment through your healing process. I provide Reiki (with individually created Chakra Charts which help us learn where and how our emotional and other energies get stored or sent to specific areas of the body, and how to release the energy) and Reiki Healing Drawings. I am now doing Reiki Healing work in NYC, by appointment (as well as in CT) at a superb holistic health and wellness center, Fitness Results on 5th Avenue in Chelsea.

“I received your Chakra Drawing in the mail yesterday. It is entirely beautiful. So mystical. I am sure it will reveal many more truths as I go through my travels. I am grateful to you. Please know how much of a positive impact you have made on my healing process. The Reiki you provided was a gift and a privilege to receive.” —William Carelton

“Of all the healings I’ve ever had, yours I really felt—and afterwards felt good for a long while. I took a walk yesterday evening and plan to do it again today.” —S.U.cropped-banner.jpgimg_2870

Reiki Room at the Cottage Studio

Reiki is an ancient Japanese healing art, a gentle-touch therapy. In becoming a Reiki practitioner, one assumes the honor and responsibility of allowing the Life Source, or “Universal Life Energy” to pour through and heal the self and others. This is called the “Attuning” and it is a life-changing event. To attune to heal and allow that energy to channel through me to heal others and the self is one of the greatest gifts in my life.

Throughout my childhood my dad, who is an osteopath, taught all of us in the family that everything is connected in the body, and that for it to work and be well, we must understand the interconnectedness of our joints, muscles, organs, nerves, etc. Reiki teaches us that Universal Life Energy is what gives our body the ability to balance all its facets, and to heal itself.

It’s all about energy: We are energy, everyone and everything around us is energy in one form or another. It is seemingly invisible and yet most powerful. Our spirit energy is joined with the energy of the mind and body, and tuning into our emotional, spiritual and physical energy is key to healing and feeling a sense of well-being.

WORD FOR THE DAY: METAMORPHOSIS

metamorphosisThis morning my drawing/painting meditation included choosing a word in the dictionary (with my eyes closed). I got metamorphosis. Change. Changing thoughts is a primary way toward happiness (our thoughts doom us sometimes). Being creative is one way I change my thoughts because I go into a zone where the things that bother me morph into newly created imagery. Shifts take place, something new starts to happen.

HUMMINGBIRD

A hummingbird keeps visiting us and loves these flowers that are really considered weeds, and I don’t know what they are, but the blossoms at the top of them look like small, orange orchids. I’ve let them grow to be taller than me because, even though they are weeds, they must be magic if a hummingbird is drawn to them. I always loved what George W. Carver said, “A weed is a flower.”

AUGUST DREAM: RED TOBACCO

I dreamed a Native American Elder came to me and showed me “red tobacco” leaves. He put many leaves together for me and placed them in a leather pouch, telling me that this pouch had been handed down in the family for many generations. He told me to “give it to the people when the Earth Changes come”. When I woke up, I had to go look up “red tobacco” to see if there even was such a thing—and when I did I learned that red tobacco is used for the ceremonial purpose of bringing earth and The Great Spirit together. The smoke rises and connects earth to spirit. It is not to be abused as tobacco is today, but to be used in the peace pipe (not even necessarily inhaled) to remind us to connect with the spirit world. I read also that tobacco bought commercially is full of 4,000 chemicals or more. It made me wonder if I ought to grow red tobacco and use it for spiritual ceremonies as it was intended. The Elder in my dream wanted me to care about the community, and I believe the dream reminded me that I have a role to play in being part of a community. I woke up wanting to honor him by doing as he asked me to do.
